Fast Weight Loss Diets: Why Your Weight Loss Diet Will Fail!
95% of Weight Loss Diets Fail and How You Can Actually Lose Weight
Hi, my name is Lucy and I’ll cover 5 strong reasons why weight loss diets fail and how you can achieve fast weight loss that is both safe and healthy.
For the past 10 years, I have been helping everyday people lose weight, through the use of various fast weight loss diets. Recently, I’ve undertaken a study on what’s going on in the weight loss industry, only to find that 95% of weight loss diets fail (Cohen, Ph.d 2009).
We’re told that, in order for rapid weight loss, you must do 60 – 90 minutes of physical activity each day and eat a balanced diet (Surgeon General of the USA 2010), if it’s really that simple, why are 68% of Americans overweight? (Lancet Journal of Medicine 2010)
In this article, I will be covering the following 5 points:
- Carbs are NOT the Enemy and Carbs ARE the Enemy
- Diet Results DON’T LAST
- You should avoid diets that recommend calorie or point counting
- High Protein/Low Carb Diets Screws Up Your Health
- Diets are EXPENSIVE
An Important point to remember: at the end of this article, I’ll be revealing what I consider to be the only diet that actually works – so keep reading!
Ok, let’s get started:
1) Carbs are NOT the Enemy and Carbs ARE the Enemy
There are two types of carbs, simple carbs such as sugar and complex carbs, such as pasta/fibre/rice.
Let’s talk about complex carbs first, they are not the enemy! You need them in your diet for these reasons:
- They give you on going energy
- They keep you fuller for longer (which reduces your need to snack)

- They help keep you regular (make it easier when you need to poop)
- They reduce risks of colon cancer
- They help regulate blood sugar levels
- and much more!
The problem people have with complex carbs is that they eat way too much. It’s all about portion control.
Here’s a great example:
The recommend serving size of pasta (a complex carb) is only half a cup, when you order pasta at a restaurant, you are serve 4 cups of pasta!
Complex Carbs are not the enemy, ridiculous portion sizes are the enemy! (Miller, RD LDN 2011).
Now let’s talk about simple carbs:
Simple carbs are the enemy. They create massive spikes in blood sugar levels, your body’s natural response is to increase insulin levels. As a result, the foods high in sugar are stored as fat (O’Brian Ph.d 2011) The science is a bit more complex than that, but you get the idea, simple carbs are bad.
2) Diet Results DON’T LAST
The problem with diets, they’re only short term. A study by Harvard School of Medicine researchers found that 80% of people on a weight loss diet, over a three year period, actually put more weight on. Meaning, they lost weight at the beginning – after a few months, they gain it all back (and then some).
The reason for this is simple, with a diet, you’re restricting the foods that you eat, so once you’ve lost weight, you go back to your normal eating habits and thus, gain weight. (Surgeon General of Michigan State 2010)
An interesting study: researches at Flinders University, in Adelaide Australia, found that dieters who changed eating habits by following a smart meal plan, were 27 times more likely to experience weight loss over a 3 year period, compared to those that followed a crash diet.
Simply put – sustainable weight loss is the key!
3) Avoid diets that recommend calorie or point counting.
Calorie counting is one of the worse methods to lose weight, simply because it’s not practical for you to be weighing and measuring all the foods that you eat. An average recipe contains 8 ingredients, are you really going to stand there and measure all the calories in 8 ingredients before you cook them? You might when you start the diet, but over time, almost everybody gives up.
4) High Protein/Low Carb Diets Screws Up Your Health
Diets such as the Atkins diet promote high protein, low carb meals – which can be extremely bad for your health, usually, all protein sources are high in saturated fat, which can cause clogging in the arteries. It’s actually recommend by the American Heart Association to limit the intake of saturated fat to less than 10% of your daily intake.
By limiting the amount of Carbs you eat, the end result is you feel lethargic and constipated, which is not much fun. In fact, 60% of your daily intake of calories should consist of carbohydrates and the majority of that 60% should be complex carbohydrates.
5) Diets are EXPENSIVE
An article published in the Wall Street Journal estimated that Americans spent 32 Billion Dollars on diet and health food supplements. Obviously diet supplements are not helping if 68% of Americans are overweight. (Lancet Journal of Medicine 2010)
The problem with these is as soon as you stop buying the food, 98.7% of people regain the weight (Tann, 2011). These types of diets have a higher failure rate then other general diets.
In short – don’t waste your money on supplements or shakes or health foods or pre-packaged meals or pills.
Here’s what to look for in a diet!
From my study, I’ve concluded that there are 5 main points that you should look for in a diet, to ensure that you are one of those 5% of dieters that succeed.
1) The diet must acknowledge that sugar is the enemy. It should also list foods to avoid that have the potential to spike your blood sugar levels.
2) The diet must NOT be a diet; rather, it should be a selection of meal plans. As we’ve discussed, diets don’t work in the long term.
3) These meal plans must focus on a variety of foods. For example, don’t use a diet that only recommends boiled cabbage. Bad idea.
4) You must be able to adapt the diet to suit your own needs. (E.g., if the meal plan recommends a food that you don’t like, you don’t have to eat it)
5) A diet that recommends you buy supplements, shakes or pre-packaged meals is NOT a diet I recommend.
Which diet do I recommend?
After careful consideration, I’ve decided that the diet which meets all these criteria is a diet I bet you’ve never heard of before.
It’s called The Diet Solution and its main focus is on changing eating habits in clever ways. I’m not going to go into too much detail about The Diet Solution, as all the information about the diet is mentioned on their website.

Great post Lucy,
I can’t wait to try out the Diet Solution, hopefully it’s a good solution
Hi Lucy,
I am happy I found your blog. You are providing some very beneficial information in your article. What I have done to lose 12 pounds in 1 month, is I drink plenty of water. Especially before and during meals. I substitute water with fresh fruit juice that I get from using the best juice extractor I could find. Of course, eating plenty of fresh veggies is also good. I am a meat eater but, I watch the quantity and the meat must be lean.
I had also bought the product you recommend here, “The Diet Solution” but I had just bought it before I found your blog:-( All I can do right now is recommend that your readers also purchase it. Because it works! Thank you for posting this article for us
Hi!
I was wondering why people are still on a diet for ages without actual weight loss result. Your article clarifies very well everything about diets.
Hey great post. I think I may try the diet solution with my bowflex revolution that I just bought. But it does work with men, right?
“The diet must NOT be a diet”. Very well put. Did you know that the word diet comes from the Greek word “diaita”, which means way of life? Most people believe that they can restrict their calorie intake for a short period of time, lose weight and then return to their old unhealthy habits. This is simply not true and that’s why most diets fail in the long run.
Great post. I can’t wait to try The Diet Solution Program
Great post. I want to try the diet solutions program now too.
I tried the Adkins diet with my wife a couple years ago. We both lost a lot of weight.. I went from 250lbs to 198lbs in about 6 months. My wife went from 177lbs to 145lbs in the same period of time. More importantly my cholesterol dropped like a rock. My bad cholesterol was cut in half and my good cholesterol doubled. My doctor was impressed, while she would not endorse the diet she said the numbers don’t lie and said she would not change what I was doing. To be honest the only drawback was it is a little expensive. You can’t low carb too much at the fast food restaurants although more and more of them offer decent salads. A back injury got me off my diet plan and I gained back the weight. No ones fault but my own. I am ready to get healthy again so why shouldn’t I return to the Atkins plan if it worked so well the last time?
Nice post……I will try diet solution program ..I think it will helps many for peoples.
Great post, I really like it.
I was always leery of those super strict diets – true, they may drop a bunch of weight really fast, but how well with the weight loss be maintained once we go back to normal life?
In defense of the Atkins diet – some people are consuming way more carbs than they need. Consider all things – sodas and juices, bread products, junk foods – it may not be healthy to cut carbs out of the diet completely, or to consider fat entirely fine, but the concept isn’t so bad.
Right Truly! Common sense should prevail, but too many people just simply don’t have any, even in regards to their own health.
I’m not a full out Atkins dieter, but I did drop a substantial amount of weight just getting rid of soda in my diet, and drinking my coffee black instead of with cream and sugar. Does that count as a diet?
I’d say that’s a diet, Dennis, just a really simple one
Diets really are expensive, especially ones like Weight Watchers and Nutrisystem where you have to buy all the meals from them. No wonder it’s a multi-billion dollar industry, just like the post pointed out!
Great article and thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely look into the Diet Solution.
Casy, definitely try the Atkins diet again if it was working for you, but I do have a question. What made you gain the weight back? Did you fall off your diet or did you just stop exercising because of your injury?
One of the problems with dieting is thinking of it as a diet. It really has to be a complete lifestyle change, or else you’ll just gain the weight back when you end the diet. It’s obvious.
I like the references you’ve included in your post, they are very compelling.
I take supplements, but weight loss isn’t really my goal for them One of them is apple cider vinegar. It works wonders for my arthritis, but I recently heard of someone taking it for weight loss as well.
I haven’t heard of apple cider vinegar, but I see the capsules sold in the health food store. Let me know if you find out more about that. My knees would probably feel better if I lost a few pounds, nevermind arthritis, lol!
Hmm, the Diet Solution, sounds interesting. I’ve heard good things about it elsewhere as well.
Yeah Casey, fast food and low carb definitely don’t mix! Although I’m pretty sure that fast food is bad for any diet, really. Good luck getting back in shape!
I’ve never heard a doctor say anything good about Atkins, at least not to me.
I tried Slim Fast and a few other shake plans because it looked convenient. But I found them unsatisfying and like you said, expensive!
Lisa, if you think slim fast is expensive you should try nutrisystem. Better food, but still really expensive.
I’ll definitely read that article you liked to from the America Heart Association. Weight loss would be great, but I have to put my health first.
Very well written and informative article, and great advice for any dieter.
People seem to really like the Diet Solution, where do I pick up a copy?
